The Belle Harbor CoveThis area in Belle Harbor, New York, between Beach 125th to Beach 130th, that has long been an eyesore in our community. Over the years, city government officials have neglected the Rockaway community and now our local city officials are demanding attention to the districts they represent. City government is beginning to take a second look at what our community needs and how the benefits of water access can improve our quality of life and property value. One of the locations being discuss is the Jamaica Bay / Belle Harbor Waterfront. Many believe this area will be an ideal location for something new and exciting in the community of Belle Harbor and the neighboring sections of Rockaway Park and Neponsit.
What better place than an area where the Belle Harbor Pier of 1927 once served the community?
The area mentioned above is owned by New York City ~ Small Business Administration while the N.Y.C. Economic Development Corp (NYC EDC) manages the land. According to civic meetings and announcements, Mayor Bloomberg, is seeking to expand the city's water trial, that promotes recreational use of the water surrounding N.Y.C. ~ A Waterfront town.
Where will the funding come from?:
The 2010 New York State Budget allocated 9 million dollars for a partial bay wall repair, meaning
there is a budgetary line item in the current NYS budget to repair the bay wall that could include B125th Street to B130th Street. With the NY State funding along with New York City EDC efforts, the Belle Harbor Cove Project can
become a reality. The wall needs to be fixed, the new design is ready, a majority of the community wants it, the funding is available
and the leadership of our local officials can make it happen for our
community, starting NOW.
In June 2009, the N.Y. Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance came to the Rockaways
and fostered the idea of creating a venue in our community that offers
access to the waters of Jamaica Bay. Local residents made several suggestions and opinions on
water access; their questions and worries were answered with the John Haden Design. This design has taken community input and turned the
community's vision into reality by illustrating the possibilities we
can have in our Rockaway neighborhood.
The N.Y. Parks Dept. is a strong advocate of the "Water Trial" and has been actively supporting water access throughout the 5 boroughs. This city agency started with 2 launch sites in the city and now has 30 sites for the residents to use. Water Trail Advocates are forecasting a total of 80 water trail locations sites by the end of 2012.
"Belle Harbor Cove is long overdue and should be on the city's list of launch sites!"
Rockaway has been a "Watertown" since the first settlers landed on the sand bar in 1685. Over the years, for whatever reason, the residents have been denied easy access to the water for recreational use. It's time to correct the errors made during the Robert Moses era and create a special place for our children to explore and our families to enjoy.
